Joanne Stevens Nambin/Nangari was born in Darwin in 1967. Her Aboriginal name is Marrnjawurrdu. Joanne’s father worked as a stockman on Number 1 Camp at Jamungku (new Wave Hill Station) and Joanne grew up there, attending school on the station until her early teens when the family moved to Daguragu. She has lived in Daguragu (Wattie Creek) since that time. She has three children and six grandchildren.

Joanne first started painting at the Daguragu Art and Craft Centre when it operated in the 1990s. She is now a passionate member of Karungkarni Art and Culture Centre where she works hard to create her delightful botanically themed artworks and to participate in cultural and Gurindji language activities. Joanne particularly enjoys collecting and painting bush food and bush medicine in her unique and delicate contemporary style.
